We have established that God reveals to us our purpose. We have seen and understood that He does not place us on earth clueless as to who He created us to be. However, I have come to learn that knowing a truth and living that truth are two different things altogether.
How did Abraham live the truth of who he was as a fatherless father? What truth did Paul live, that converted him from a persecutor to an apostle?
This is the truth they lived: it is not enough to know your purpose, you must know Him, who gave you your purpose. Isaiah 48:17 (NIV) tells us:
This is what the Lord says—
your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
“I am the Lord your God,
who teaches you what is best for you,
who directs you in the way you should go.
This is echoed in Psalm 32:8 (NIV):
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.
When you study the lives of Abraham and Paul, you will see that they each developed an intimate relationship with God. God directed their lives, after all, He knew the plans He had for them, as per Jeremiah 29:11. This same principle applies to us today. Yes, we can achieve some measure of success simply by acting on the insight of purpose He has revealed to everyone, without bias. However, we will never fully be all that we were created to be, outside of Him.
So, how do we develop an intimate relationship with the Lord? We do this through His Word. It is through His Word that we know Him. It is through His Word that He will direct us.
Psalm 119:105 tells us:
Your word is a lamp for my feet,
a light on my path.
As you spend time with the Lord, through His Word, the Holy Spirit will teach you and direct you on the way you should go as per John 14:26 and John 16:13.
You do not need to know every single aspect of your purpose. As you walk with the Lord, He will daily lead you along the path He created for you from the very beginning.
for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.
Philippians 2:13 (NIV)
